About Me

A little about me…

Hi there, my name is Cassandra (Cassie for short). I live in Tennessee with my husband and several furry family members. In 2007 I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in University Studies. I have a hard time settling on any one pursuit, thus the jack-of-all-trades degree. I spend my free time working on costumes, collecting My Little Pony figures, reading, watching Netflix and selling items on the internet.

How I discovered cosplay…

I made my first official cosplay in October of 2002. Earlier that year, Cartoon Network had aired a few episodes of Sailor Moon and I was immediately smitten. The airing was abruptly cancelled so I turned to the internet for answers. What I found would occupy my free time for years to come. I learned about cosplay and conventions and soon started planning my Sailor Moon and Serena costumes for that Halloween (they were horrible, lol). The following year I went to my first anime convention and was blown away by what I saw there. I wandered around starry-eyed the entire weekend. I didn’t win anything in the costume contest but it just made me that much more determined to improve my skills. I won my first cosplay award (Best Craftsmanship Novice) in 2004 at MTAC and went on to win Best in Show in the Master division at both MTAC and AWA in 2006. I was invited to help judge the cosplay competition at AWA in 2007 and my Fai costume was on display in the Costume Gallery. I have not gone back to competing as of yet.

My first Sailor Moon attempt. I bought the suit off eBay, I think the only parts I made were the odango covers, the brooch and the stripe on the boot tops. Feel free to giggle at the stripper boots.

Other things that keep me entertained…

I think you can tell a lot about a person by the media they consume. It’s for this reason the following categories may be a bit long-winded.

Anime/Manga: Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura, Chobits, Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle, Record of Lodoss War, Inu-Yasha, Ranma 1/2, Cowboy Bebop, Howl’s Moving Castle, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Paradise Kiss. I don’t get into anime or manga as much as I used to but I give them a try again every once in a while.

TV Shows: Xena: Warrior Princess, I Love Lucy, Dick Van Dyke, Bewitched, Pepper Ann, DuckTales, TaleSpin, Married With Children, Thundercats (classic and new), original My Little Pony, Eerie Indiana, Get Smart, Batman (all of ’em), Powerpuff Girls, Samurai Jack, Legend of the Seeker, Battlestar Galactica, Forensic Files, Big Bang Theory, MST3K, RiffTrax, Doctor Who, Eureka, The Wonder Years, The Guild, Quantum Leap, The Mighty Boosh, SHERLOCK, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, A Game of Thrones. Too many to mention but those are some of my favorites.

Movies: The Princess Bride, The Labyrinth, DragonHeart, Legend, Hook, A Knight’s Tale, Jurassic Park, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, The Neverending Story, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Shakespeare in Love, The Princess Diaries, Beetlejuice, Ever After, The Last Unicorn, Return to Oz, Scrooged, Big, Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Edward Scissorhands, P.J. Hogan’s live action version of Peter Pan, Secondhand Lions, What Dreams May Come, Shrek 2 (largely due to Puss in Boots), You’ve Got Mail, Some Kind of Wonderful, The Last Starfighter, Practical Magic, The Karate Kid (all except the remake, sorry), Home Alone, Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet, Good Will Hunting, Road to Perdition, The Sasquatch Gang, The Godfather parts 1 & 2, The Shop Around The Corner, Batman movies provided the Batsuit is nipple-free, Army of Darkness, Back to The Future, Iron Man, Enchanted, Mary Poppins and most animated Disney movies. Pretty much any superhero, fantasy, medieval or whimsical movie has a chance with me. Oh, and practically anything by Tim Burton with some exceptions (I’m lookin’ at you, Dark Shadows). I could go on but I’m just going to stop there. So yeah, I like my movies.

Music: Elvis Presley, The Beatles, David Bowie, Prince, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Frank Sinatra, John Denver, Adam Lambert, The Eels, Owl City, classical, tons of one-hit wonders from the 50s-70s. I like a little bit of everything, really, except modern country music *shudder*.

Books: Charlotte’s Web, The House of 30 Cats, The Last Unicorn, The Crickle Crack Tree, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, The Neverending Story, the Redwall series, the first set of books in the Warriors series, Watership Down, Howl’s Moving Castle, The Bartimaeus Trilogy, Tailchaser’s Song, The Sword of Truth, A Song of Ice and Fire, The Lost Years of Merlin and let’s not forget old school Goosebumps and anything by Dr. Suess. I’m reluctantly starting to purchase many of my books in digital format these days. It saves trees and clears up a lot of space in my house. I make exceptions for certain special books and reference books on sewing and crafting. Still, I’m torn on the issue. Few things can beat the smell of a book on a rainy day.

Video Games: Animal Crossing, Harvest Moon, Dance Dance Revolution, Kingdom Hearts, Pokemon (esp. 1st & 2nd generation), most Mario Bros. games but especially the Paper Mario series and Luigi’s Mansion, Katamari, The Sims, Beatles Rock Band, Professor Layton.
